to customize your screen.

The new look

The Appearance
control panel

The Appearance control panel lets you choose

  • an accent color for windows and a highlight color for text (For instance, the "Black and White" accent color offers high contrast for visually impaired users.)
  • options for collapsing windows
  • the system font used for menus and window titles (the new Charcoal font or the Chicago font)
  • whether to use the new platinum appearance in all applications (If an application is having problems displaying the new appearance, you can turn the platinum appearance off.)

The Desktop Pictures
control panel

The Desktop Pictures control panel lets you display an image from a graphics file on the desktop. You can use your own pictures if they are in the GIF, JPEG, Photoshop, or Macintosh Pictures format. Additional pictures are provided on the Mac OS CD-ROM disc. (Be sure to copy the pictures to your hard disk before using them.)

Additional desktop patterns are also provided on the Mac OS CD-ROM disc. You can install a new desktop pattern by dragging it into the desktop patterns section of the control panel.
