Here are some steps you can
follow to solve problems, plus pointers
to troubleshooting information.


What to do if you run into trouble:

Gather as much information as you can to help you identify the source of the problem.

When a problem occurs, make a note of

  • the message you see on the screen and its ID number (if any)
  • the programs you were using
  • any items that have been added to the System Folder recently
  • anything else that seems relevant

    Restart your computer.

    Often you can eliminate a problem simply by restarting your computer, which clears the computer's memory.

    Check the manual or onscreen help.

    If the problem affects only one application program, see the documentation that came with that program. If the problem is more general, see the sources of Mac OS troubleshooting information listed below.


Where to look for information about the Mac OS

If you're having a general problem with your computer, consult the following sources of information:


Your user's manual includes a troubleshooting chapter plus instructions for how to reinstall system software.


Mac OS Help answers hundreds of questions about how to use the Mac OS. To open Mac OS Help, switch to the Finder, then look in the Help menu.


Apple System Profiler lets you view information about your computer, helping you to troubleshoot problems. To open it, choose Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu.


Read Me files contain compatibility information and other late-breaking news. You can find them in the folder named "Mac OS Read Me Files."
