System Folder


What can I do with the System Folder?

The System Folder contains the software your computer needs to perform its basic operations. This page describes some of the items you'll find in your System Folder.

Apple Menu Items folder

Contains all the items available in the Apple menu. You can add a program, document, or folder to the Apple menu by placing its icon in the Apple Menu Items folder. To create submenus within the Apple menu, you can place folders inside of folders. You can use the Apple Menu Options control panel to set the number of items in the submenus.

Clipboard

This file is a temporary storage place for the last item you cut or copied from a document.

Control Panels folder

Contains individual control panels, which you use to adjust optional settings on your computer. You can open the Control Panels folder by choosing Control Panels from the Apple menu. For brief descriptions of your control panels, open the Extensions Manager control panel and click Show Item Information.

Extensions folder

Contains software that modifies or "extends" the capabilities of your computer. When you start up your computer, extensions are automatically loaded into the computer's memory, and a row of extension icons appears at the bottom of the screen. For brief descriptions of your extensions, open the Extensions Manager control panel and click Show Item Information.

Finder

Displays the desktop area, where you work with files and disks, and keeps track of your files.

Fonts folder

Contains font suitcases or individual font files. These fonts are available for you to use in any programs where you use text. You can place up to 128 font suitcases or font files in this folder. PostScript fonts are not included in the 128-file limit. Font suitcases can hold any number of font files, up to a limit of 16 MB.

Launcher Items folder

Contains files, folders, and applications that appear in the Launcher window.

Preferences folder

Contains preferences files created by individual applications. A preference file determines application settings.

Printer Descriptions folder

Contains files describing the features of specific PostScript printers.

Shutdown Items folder

Contains applications or scripts that run automatically when you shut down your computer. You can add or remove items from this folder.

Startup Items folder

Contains applications or scripts that run automatically when you start your computer. You can add or remove items from this folder.

System

Contains some system-wide resources, such as sounds and keyboard layouts.
