Open Transport

What can I do with Open Transport?

Open Transport is the modern, industry-standard networking and communications software for the Mac OS.

The AppleTalk control panel lets you choose how your computer is connected to a local area network (for example, through an Ethernet connection, the modem port, or the printer port).

The TCP/IP control panel lets you tell your computer how to communicate with the Internet--for example, through AppleTalk, Ethernet, or PPP (which is used with modems).

The Modem control panel lets you select the brand of modem you're using and which port your modem is connected to.

The PPP control panel lets you specify other information your computer needs to use a modem, such as your log on name and the phone number of your Internet service provider. In addition, it lets you set up your computer to dial your Internet service provider every time you open an Internet application or to disconnect from the Internet automatically after a specified length of time.

With Open Transport, you can

  • use more than one networking system at once (for example, AppleTalk to communicate with network printers and TCP/IP to connect to the Internet)
  • save and modify different network configurations
  • switch among network configurations quickly and easily
