Internet Software

The Mac OS includes a collection of powerful software for making the most of the Internet.

Signing up

The Internet Setup Assistant helps you configure your system to access the Internet. It can help you whether you're connecting through a modem or a local area network, creating a new account with an Internet service provider (ISP), or using settings from an existing account with an ISP.

Connecting

The Internet Dialer lets you connect to the Internet through a modem. If you have more than one Internet service provider, the Internet Dialer allows you to choose which configuration to make active, including a LAN configuration.

You can also use PPP software to connect to the Internet using a modem.

Customizing your system for the Internet

The Internet Setup Utility lets you select documents, files, and applications you want opened each time you connect to the Internet. You can also change your active Internet configuration, import or export Internet configurations, and remove or duplicate configurations.

Internet Config is a shareware application that lets you add, modify, and remove configuration information for Internet services such as e-mail, newsgroups, and the World Wide Web. You can also set preferences for fonts, file mappings, and helper applications. You can find out how to use Internet Config by reading the IC_FAQ.html document on your hard disk (Internet Config Frequently Asked Questions).

Browsers and e-mail

Netscape Navigator and Cyberdog are Internet browsers that help you move through the World Wide Web and access a variety of Internet services such as e-mail and newsgroups. They also allow you to view documents on your hard disk that have been created using hypertext markup language (HTML).

Claris Emailer Lite lets you send and receive electronic mail over the Internet.

If you're connected to the Internet, see these Web sites for more information:

Multimedia plug-ins

Plug-ins extend the capability of your Internet browser (such as Netscape Navigator or Cyberdog) to allow you to view movies, animation, and virtual environments, and to hear speech and music.

  • QuickTime plug-in lets you experience video, audio, music, animation, and VR (virtual reality) scenes directly in a Web page.
  • LiveAudio plug-in lets you play sound files.
  • Shockwave plug-in lets you experience interactive multimedia, graphics, and real-time audio on the World Wide Web.

Personal Web Sharing

Mac OS Personal Web Sharing lets you create your own Web server and share files with everyone on the Internet.

Information services

America Online (on the Mac OS CD-ROM disc) is the world's most popular Internet online service, with more than 8 million members worldwide. The service provides subscribers with a variety of interactive features - electronic mail, Internet access, news, sports, weather, financial information and transactions, electronic shopping, and more. If you're connected to the Internet, see the AOL Web Site (http://www.aol.com) for more information.

PointCast (on the Mac OS CD-ROM disc) is an information service that automatically downloads up-to-the-minute information, such as news headlines, sports scores, and stock prices, to your computer. If you're connected to the Internet, see the PointCast Web Site (http://www.pointcast.com) for more information.

Marimba's Castanet Tuner (on the Mac OS CD-ROM disc) lets you tune in to "channels" on the Internet in much the same way that you tune in to your favorite television channels. When new information is added to one of your selected sites, your tuner will automatically retrieve it for you. If you're connected to the Internet, see the Marimba Web Site (http://www.marimba.com) for more information.

Helper programs

Adobe Acrobat Reader (on the Mac OS CD-ROM disc) allows you to view and print files that are in portable document format (PDF). You will need this program to view PDF documents on the Internet and the PDF documents that are installed with your system software. If you're connected to the Internet, see the Adobe Web Site (http://www.adobe.com) for more information.

DropStuff lets you compress files quickly by dragging them onto the DropStuff icon. Compressed files are more efficiently delivered over the Internet. When you launch the DropStuff Installer, the DropStuff application is installed on your computer. Stuffit Expander allows you to expand compressed files that you receive from the Internet. If you're connected to the Internet, see the Aladdin Systems Web Site (http://www.aladdinsys.com) for more information.
