The Mac OS includes a
collection of powerful software for making the most of the
Internet.
Signing up
The Internet Setup Assistant helps you configure your system to access the
Internet. It can help you whether you're connecting through
a modem or a local area network, creating a new account with
an Internet service provider (ISP), or using settings from
an existing account with an ISP.
Connecting
The Internet
Dialer lets you connect to the
Internet through a modem. If you have more than one Internet
service provider, the Internet Dialer allows you to choose
which configuration to make active, including a LAN
configuration.
You can also use PPP software to connect to the Internet using a
modem.
Customizing your system for the Internet
The Internet Setup
Utility lets you select
documents, files, and applications you want opened each time
you connect to the Internet. You can also change your active
Internet configuration, import or export Internet
configurations, and remove or duplicate configurations.
Internet Config is a shareware application that lets you add,
modify, and remove configuration information for Internet
services such as e-mail, newsgroups, and the World Wide Web.
You can also set preferences for fonts, file mappings, and
helper applications. You can find out how to use Internet
Config by reading the IC_FAQ.html document on your hard disk
(Internet Config Frequently Asked Questions).
Browsers and e-mail
Netscape
Navigator and Cyberdog are Internet browsers that help you move through
the World Wide Web and access a variety of Internet services
such as e-mail and newsgroups. They also allow you to view
documents on your hard disk that have been created using
hypertext markup language (HTML).
Claris Emailer Lite lets you send and receive electronic mail over
the Internet.
If you're connected to the Internet, see
these Web sites for more information:
Multimedia plug-ins
Plug-ins extend the
capability of your Internet browser (such as Netscape
Navigator or Cyberdog) to allow you to view movies,
animation, and virtual environments, and to hear speech and
music.
- QuickTime plug-in lets you
experience video, audio, music, animation, and VR
(virtual reality) scenes directly in a Web page.
- LiveAudio plug-in lets you play sound files.
- Shockwave plug-in lets you experience interactive multimedia,
graphics, and real-time audio on the World Wide
Web.
Personal Web Sharing
Mac OS Personal Web
Sharing lets you create your
own Web server and share files with everyone on the
Internet.
