How do I
speed up my Internet access?
|
The speed at which
information from the Internet appears on your computer
depends on a number of factors:
- Type of access: If you're connected to the Internet through a
LAN, you'll be able to receive information more quickly
than if you're using a modem.
- Modem transmission
speed: If you are using a
modem that transmits data at a rate slower than 28,800
baud, you should consider upgrading your modem.
- Image-intensive Web
pages: Some Web sites have a
lot of images, or have one very large image. These images
take time to load onto your computer. Check to see if
your Web browser has an option not to load images.
- Slow Web servers: Some Web sites are located on slow Web
servers. There is nothing you can do to speed up your
access to these servers.
- Popular Web
servers: When "breaking news"
is posted to a Web site, a large number of people may
connect to the site at the same time, causing a
slow-down. You might try to connect to the site at
another time (such as early in the morning) or on another
day.
- Popular time of
day: The Internet is more
heavily used at some times of the day than at others. You
might try connecting to the Internet at various times of
the day to find out which times seem to work best.
