What do I need
to get on the Internet?

You get on the Internet in one of two ways:

  • through a modem and an analog phone line connected to an Internet service provider (ISP)
  • through a local area network (LAN) connected to the Internet

If your computer is in your home, you must have a modem installed and connected to a phone line before you can connect to the Internet. If your computer is in an office or school, check with your computer administrator to see if Internet access is available through a LAN.

Modem speed

A modem is a bridge between your computer and the phone line. The faster the modem, the more "traffic" it can handle. The rate pictures and other information on the Internet appear on your computer is affected by your modem speed. You must have a modem capable of transmitting data at 14,400 baud to access the Internet from your computer. If possible, you should use a modem that has a transmission rate of 28,800 baud or higher.
